Eid al Adha or Festival of the Sacrifice is one of Islam’s biggest holidays.

For those that take part in the Hajj, Eid al Adha is a time to celebrate the culmination of this special pilgrimage each year. However, it is an important event that is shared and celebrated by Muslims all around the world too.

Historically, Eid al Adha commemorates the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son, Ismael, to show his obedience to God’s command. However, before Abraham sacrificed his son, God provided him with a lamb to sacrifice instead. To commemorate this intervention of God, a ritually acceptable animal (sheep, goat, camel or cow), usually a sheep, is ritually sacrificed and divided into 3 parts during Eid al Adha. The 3 parts signify giving 1 part to charity, 1 part to relatives and keeping 1 part for the home.

Eid al Adha Falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah in the Islamic lunar calendar and the exact day and time relies on the positioning of the new moon. The festival lasts for 5 days.

Dhu al-Hijjah is the 12th and final month in the Islamic lunar calendar.

Therefore, as Eid al Adha commemorates Ibrahim’s willingness to obey God and sacrifice his son and it commemorates the end of the Hajj, Eid al Adha is a very important holiday in the Islamic calendar.
