Umrah

Umrah

Umrah is an Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca.

Umrah is a highly recommended pilgrimage, however, it is not compulsory like the Hajj.

It is a pilgrimage that can take place at any time of the year, unlike the Hajj, which is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and needs to be completed over specific dates in the last month of the Islamic calendar Dhul Hajj.

Due to this, Umrah is often referred to as the minor pilgrimage and the Hajj is often referred to as the major pilgrimage.

Pilgrimages are very important within Islam, as they bring everyone to the same place to experience a spiritual journey together. Therefore, all are placed on equal footing in life, no matter what one’s background or status is. Pilgrimages essentially highlight the importance of equality and unity, representing the solidarity of Muslims and their submission to Allah (God).

According to Shariah, which is the law of Islam, Muslims must enter a sacred state, known as Ihram, before they can perform the Umrah or the Hajj pilgrimage. To enter this state, one must perform purification rituals, abstain from certain actions, wear the required clothing and make intention for the pilgrimage.

Umrah begins at Miqat, which is also the entry station to the Hajj. This pilgrimage can be completed in a few hours, whilst the Hajj takes a few days.

Muslims need to perform 2 key rituals during Umrah. Tawaf and Sa’i or Sa’y.

Tawaf requires one to go around the Kaaba, which is the most sacred site in Islam, 7 times, in a counterclockwise direction. Men are required to do this circling 3 times at a quick pace and then 4 times at a slower pace, circling more closely to the Kaaba. This circling is very symbolic, as it is believed to demonstrate the unity of Muslims in their worship of God, as they move in harmony together.

Our Umrah Mubarak Greeting Cards are ideal for congratulating those special loved ones on completing their Umrah.

Tawaf is followed by Sa’y, which is a walk between the hills of Safa and Marwah, which are 2 hills located in the Great Mosque of Mecca. Muslims perform this walk back and forth 7 times. Men are encouraged to run during this ritually to reenact the frantic search of the water of Prophet Isma’ils mother Hajar, in which it has been taught a spring of water appeared gushing from where baby Isma’il foot was. This source of water is now called the well of Zamzam.

Muslims then conclude Umrah with the ritual of Halq, which is the ritualistic cutting of hair. Men are recommended to shave their heads fully whereas women are permitted to just trim their hair.
